Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Hanukkah Recipe Roundup

Standard

hanukah-11Hanukkah is the celebration of light and the small jug of oil that fueled the Temple Menorah for eight days.  Because of this, Hanukkah has been centered around oily foods for the at least the last thousand years.  These foods include latkes and sufganiyot—deep-fried doughnuts.
Dairy is also a prominent food during Hanukkah because the brave heroine Yehudis, helped save her people by slaying the vicious Greek general Holofernes by feeding him cheese.  Dairy-rich foods of Hanukkah celebration include kugel and cheese blintz.

For those of your familiar with these traditional foods you’ll know that they are all filled with gluten (wheat) and dairy, which may make the holiday a bit overwhelming for those avoiding these common allergens or following a more paleo-esque diet. Luckily, there are many substitutions you can make to cook up a gluten-free, dairy-free Hanukkah feast.

Latkes…potato pancakes made traditionally with wheat flour can easily be made gluten free with the use of rice flour, gluten-free all-purpose flour, or gluten-free matzo meal. classic-latkes-applesauce-2
Choose apple sauce for a naturally gluten-free topping or try Tofutti dairy-free sour cream.  If feeling ambitious and want to try your hand at making homemade dairy free sour cream try this recipe.

Here are some gluten-free, dairy-free and even paleo latkes:
Gluten Free Latkes with dairy-free garlic cream sauce
Paleo Hemp and Sweet Potato Latkes
Butternut Squash Latkes
Carrot Scallion Latkes

Sufganiyot…jelly filled donuts made with flour and buttermilk are a little bit more difficult to make gluten-free, dairy-free. Try these coconut flour donut holes as a sweet alternative.

Noodle Kugel…traditionally made with egg noodles, butter, sour cream, and milk can be intimidating to make gluten-free, dairy-free, but here is a recipe sans gluten and dairy.

Beef brisket…the beef itself is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, but is usually prepared by dusting in flour.  This can easily been substituted with gluten-free flour. Here is a recipe for gluten-free brisket.
